CHAPTER TWENTY
âMr. Alexander Nightingale,â she said quickly. âI have an appointment at 2:00 p.m. with him.â
âDo you really?â Mr. Hellion asked, looking down at her. âWhat for?â
âI would rather not say.â
âWhich simply makes me even more curious, but I shall hold it in and then ask Alex later.â He smiled again, and Harriet thought this man did that often.
âWell then, Mungo, lead on and have Bud immediately take down the large teapot, as we are to drink lashings of it with our apricotines.â
Harriet watched Mungo roll his eyes, but he did step back. Mr. Hellion entered, and she wasnât entirely sure if she should follow or wait to be called in. After all, usually in such circumstances the person you were to meet was notified you were there, and then you waited until they were ready. She might not walk in society, but she knew how to.
âHarriet, enter the house please!â Mr. Hellion called from inside.
Her eyes went to Mungo.
âAre you intending to cause trouble for anyone inside, Miss Short or Shaw?â Mungo said solemnly.
âNo indeed. I wish to enquire how the girl, Anna, is doing and am also to meet with Mr. Nightingale to discuss a matter of importance.â
The manâs face softened, and it was really something to see, as he seemed more approachable suddenly.
âThe wee lass is doing well, and it was a good thing you got her out of that place when you did. It has been a rough few days for her, but the infection is gone, and now there is just healing to be done.â
âSheâs still here?â
âAnd where else would she be in the condition she is?â The soft look was gone, and he was scowling at her again. âShe cannot be moved.â
âOf course.â Should Harriet have contacted the orphanage? What would she say, as surely what she had done was illegal. These thoughts and many more had plagued her for the last few days. âI was very worried for her.â
âSheâs going to be fine,â he said. âNow come inside, as itâs a mite chilly out today, and that fool is here, so you can be no worse than he.â
âI heard that!â
Mungoâs face changed subtly. Just a small grin, but Harriet saw it.
âCome along with you,â he said, waving her up the steps.
It was all very odd if you asked her, but then what else was she to do but enter the house. And surely odd was commonplace here; after all, Mr. Nightingale talked to the dead.
âIs Mr. Alexander Nightingale home, Mr. Mungo?â she asked when she reached the top step.
âHe is, and Iâll tell him youâre here, Miss Short or Shaw.â
âShort,â she said quickly. After all sheâd been introduced to Mr. Nightingale that way, so she should continue to do so.
The large Scotsman waved her inside, so she walked through the door and stopped, letting her eyes take in her surroundings. Of Mr. Hellion there was now no sign, but she could hear him barking out a loud laugh.
âIâll take your things,â he said, holding out his hand.
